AI-Augmented Organizational Design: Synthesizing Human and Generative AI Decision-Making for Adaptive Organizations

Cimino et al. (2024) show that innovation managers are starting to appropriate generative AI tools for creativity and decision-making. However, the organizational design implications of systematically integrating AI into core design processes remain unexplored. This research will build and test a framework for “AI-augmented organizational design,” where human managers and generative AI collaboratively craft, evaluate, and adapt organizational structures in real time. By conducting experimental workshops and field studies in organizations experimenting with AI-driven design, the project will assess impacts on adaptability, speed, and quality of decision-making. This novel synthesis pushes beyond the current focus on individual creativity or AI adoption, positioning organizational design itself as a hybrid, continuously adaptive process—a timely direction as organizations face rapid environmental change and digital transformation.
