Lately, I’ve been thinking about why my friends and I don’t find action movies as exciting anymore. I wonder if it’s because we’re so exposed to doomscrolling that our attention spans have gotten shorter. As a result, when we watch action movies and the action hasn’t started yet and it’s still in the talking phase, we already feel bored. Eventually, we rate or think of the movie as bad or boring.
I have two ideas on how to check this:
Get average ratings of action movies from before scrolling-based social media existed, until now. Maybe we could find something like downward trends or noticeable drops when (1) Instagram feeds and Twitter became popular, and (2) when TikTok, Reels, Shorts, and other short-form video apps arrived.
Group people based on how much time they spend doomscrolling, while keeping similar movie tastes. Then give each group a new action movie and compare their ratings. If doomscrolling affects attention, heavier doomscrolling groups might give lower ratings.
